はじめに
中学生に“How are you?”とたずねると，ほぼ全員が反射的に“I'm fine, thank you.”と答えます。それは英語の授業の始めに毎回その挨拶を繰り返しているからです。そこからヒントを得て，授業の始めの１分間で日常よく繰り返される11の話題を月がわりで３年間練習する『中学３年間で必ず話せる！ 英会話月別１分間メニュー＆生徒熱中ゲーム33』の出版から４年が経ちました。「英会話月別１分間メニュー」は本校の生徒全員が中学３年間で日常会話ができるようになってほしいという思いから生まれたものです。
ただし，日常会話ができても，知識がなければ何か１つの「トピック」についての会話は続きません。本書は『中学３年間で必ず話せる！ 英会話月別１分間メニュー＆生徒熱中ゲーム33』の続編として，「私たちの学校」「私の歴史」「日本の文化」「日本の生活」など知識として必要なことを会話形式で学習し，中学生・高校生として当然知っているべきことについて話せるようになることを目的としたものです。「トピック」は本校で1979年に発足した海外教育研修の事前学習として実践してきたものの中から厳選いたしました。巻末にはホームステイ先に生徒がスムーズに溶け込めるようにと作成した「１日目の会話カード」もついています。
対象学年は目安としてステップ１が中学２年生，ステップ２が中学３年生，ステップ３が高校生となっていますが，教科書の文法項目にはあまりとらわれずに作成しています。「日本の歴史」についてなどはステップ１～３まで続けて紹介しても生徒は興味をもって取り組むでしょう。「校外学習」などはそれぞれの学校の実施時期に合わせて学習していただければ幸いです。
本書では会話のほかに楽しみながら語彙や表現を増やすことができるようなゲーム，ワークシートなどを紹介しています。「“School Tour”すごろく」などは中学１年生にも楽しむことができます。また意見を言えるようになるために，まずモデルの文を覚えてから実施する「One Sentence Debate」なども紹介いたしました。ぜひ授業で実施してみてください。
本校は，14年前から東京都立戸山高等学校の谷口幸夫先生が中心となって行っている「達人セミナー」に参加し，学ばせていただいています。埼玉県小鹿野町立小鹿野小学校の瀧沢広人先生や，広島県廿日市市立大野東中学校の道面和枝先生をはじめ何人かの先生がたの授業のアイディアを本校の生徒向けにアレンジし，そのいくつかはここでも紹介させていただきました。ここに厚くお礼申し上げます。
生徒たちが英語に興味をもち，楽しく学びながら英語を習得し，国境を越えて豊かな人生を考える基礎を培ってほしいと願っています。
